With Carter dying today, that means Bush Jr. is the last one still living as of now. He served in the late 60s into the early 70s in the air national guard.
People tried to use that against him 04 when he was running against Kerry, who was infantry and went to Vietnam if I’m remembering correctly. Bush was stateside during Vietnam. But people were trying to say he was a coward or something. Which is stupid upon its face. The F-102 killed a lot of pilots during its time in service; it was a hard plane to fly and had a ton of issues that caused random crashes. Bush had guts to get in that death trap of a jet in my opinion.
Plus a whole bunch of guys were stateside or in Europe during Vietnam. It’s not like those places suddenly didn’t soldiers anymore just because of Vietnam. I had an older family member (he died a few years back from lung cancer) who got lucky because of that. His older brother got sent to Vietnam but had an administrative job so he never left Saigon. By comparison, when the guy I’m talking about signed up he was infantry but because his older brother was already deployed to Vietnam he got sent to Germany instead. Lucky as hell since being infantry his chance of getting killed or wounded was super high. By comparison, his older brother had a desk job so his time in Vietnam wasn’t crazy or anything.
Based on his age, Desantis would have been in close to the same time my dad was in. My dad was in 89-96 Army and then went into the national guard for a few years. But he got out before 911 happened.
Navy in 2004 and was promoted to lieutenant before serving as a legal advisor to SEAL Team One. He was stationed at Joint Task Force Guantanamo in 2006 and was deployed to Iraq in 2007.
He expertly used the inherent prestige of having been president to get stuff done.
Most people who serve as president go into quiet retirement after their service. He made the decision to use what he had gained to try and make the world just a slightly better place.
