my opinion is people are just letting their true selves out.

I think that is partly true as well. People who desperately wanted to say certain things or act a certain way have been emboldened to do so with the rise of Trump.
However, I still am convinced that years of the msm beatdown literally convinced them that anyone who doesn’t believe what they do is an outright enemy. Donald recognized that, played on their manufactured hatred, and manipulated them.
Donald knows people. He knows greed; he knows base emotions; he knows how to illicit responses based on those emotions. Apparently, he got quite a few people to call for his brand.
