And just prior to the high interest rates, inflation was the highest since the post-war recovery and nearly double of what it is today. The Jimmy Carter malaise was real.

Over the last 40 years, the government has changed the methodology used to calculate the CPI. The changes dramatically reduce the calculated inflation rate.

Based on the 1980 method, the current inflation rate is over 15% and is actually higher than it was in 1980.
