Random question…given the hurricane path along east and hurricane paths in the gulf…have those coastlines been “carved out” by hurricanes over millions of years?
I would say it was a factor, yes.
BTW, intensity models have the storm peaking in 12 hours, some at Category 5. The official forecast is a peak of 155 MPH, probably weakening slightly with an eyewall replacement cycle, then weakening gradually as it moves north.
But we could, very briefly, have a Category 5 storm.

Dorian will likely officially be upgraded to Category 5 at the 5:00 pm advisory.
Tell that to the relatives of the people who are going to die in this storm, or the people who lose their houses and all their belongings.

I remember when Charlie came through here. We were without power and cell phones for weeks. I’m not sure people can really grasp what that is like to live through. It was like being thrown back into the stone age. You can only understand it if you lived it.
Amazing how everyone pitched in to help one another. In my neighborhood? We had people chainsawing trees out of the way, sharing food and their pools for relief from the heat.
People are awesome and amazing. We should never forget that.

The models have remained very consistent over the last three runs, even the crazy ass TABB and its loop de loop around Florida. 
That’s 180mph+.
They picked up some winds in the Category 5 range from the aircraft, but haven’t seen fit to officially upgrade the storm yet.
