I’d say my European ancestors on my dad’s side were dirt poor, but I can’t. They couldn’t afford dirt.

Mine were fleeing the Fascists and escaping the purge of Michael Collins supporters after the War for Irish Independence, respectively. The former even stowed away on a tramp steamer to Canada and then walked across the border.

If you were to take the immigrants who immigrated her prior to the 50s, any idea how much public aid the immigrants received through their 10th year here?

How about now? Any idea how much aid people who immigrate to the states now will receive through their 10th year here?

Adjusting for inflation, any idea what the difference would be in social aid received by the immigrants between the folks entering the country before the 50s and the folks entering after the 50s?

When you have an immigration program based on you make it on your own, or from family, or you return to your birth country, that is a lot easier to get support for rather than immigrate today and receive a govt check next week.

We have our own poor who we are not doing enough for and now you want to bring in more.

Reminds me of a kid who is asking his mom for a puppy when they already have three dogs that he promised to take care of and he doesnt. But he sure wants that puppy and trust him. He will take care of it.

The French gifted the USA with the statue but the Government at the time didn’t have the money to put it together or a podium to put it on so private funding was needed for assembly of the massive gift.
