Seriously. This isn’t Syria, where everyone kind of needed Assad to win, and so Putin and Obama/Trump were willing to look away from dead nationals.

If Russia takes Ukraine by force then we will have done for Ukraine what we did for Hungary in 1956. Lead them to be completely independent, encourage them against Russia, and say bye when the Russian military shows up.
If Russia does take Ukraine, likely Eastern Europe and including the Baltic states and Findland will then be fully militarized members of Nato and the cold war will be on again.

We don’t have to defend Ukraine.
Just let the Russian repeat Afghanistan. Throw a few second hand AK-74s and RPG-29s to the insurgents clandestinely. Maybe have Moldova sell them a few S-300 mobile systems.
They’ll do the work. We just sit back and laugh as the Russians ■■■■ themselves.

It doesn’t matter if you can take territory. It matters if you can hold it.
The Russians won’t be able to hold it. They don’t have the logistics necessary to pull it off in a country the size of Ukraine. Ten thousand Russians per month will die trying to. And eventually Putin’s state media won’t be able to cover it up when every Russian mother from Saint Petersburg to Vladivostok gets a folded Russian flag delivered by a 23 year old lieutenant to them.
