Say what you will about Putin, but he had the same insight as OBL: the US has fractures that are easy to exploit. Why would Russia swallow Ukraine whole when it can just do a regime change, dare the US to be hypocritical about it, and then reach a similar accord with the new ‘legitimate’ government as it has with Byelorus?

No, this is never as simple as you think it is. Brussels, for all its flaws, has a clear sense of its natural limit. There is no will among the northern countries to absorb more developmentally troubled regions, and no will to add capital flight zones among the southern ones still trying to find a solution to ‘everyone else’ serving as export zones for German overproduction.
