My guess is that Putin is using this larger hardline stance to make his incursion into Ukraine seem modest.

That’s not going to happen. Putin is negotiating.
He doesn’t want NATO…American military in Russian underbelly energy sector.
No to the point of Russia gets you protect its immediate zone. Not to extent of their demands, which are of course purposefully ludicrous

Russia can demand all they want…if you want to fight for European expansion then by all means…pick up a rifle and go over there.
Walk your talk.

I understand that point of view theoretically. Why is their a need to 'saber rattle" near their border? But they arent making their case effectively by pushing to invade Ukraine.
Well they are in Ukraine and have been since 2013 but their position is pretty clear. Counter nato

And you know this how?
He will move into Ukraine to keep America out…and I don’t blame him.
If you support EU expansionism by all mean pick up a rifle and fight for em…and they pay you Eros.
this is not an answer to my question or to anything.

That escalated.
Putin is looking for a reason to invade Ukraine becuase of domestic politics.
He is not negotiating in good faith because the demand to pull NATO out of NATO countries.
Putin will roll over Ukraine…. But the crumbling empire of Russia will not be able to hold on to it.

Thats the reality. Putin invading Ukraine would be akin to us invading Iraq- a complete mess.
repeating my question.
still waiting for an answer
“i already answered” or along those lines is admission that you don’t know
Brilliant! But have you noticed … it’s a neighbor.
Is it remotely possible that Ukraine is more significant to Russia as a neighbor that shares a border than as an “old Soviet Union satellite country” ?
