They are protesting because they claim that east Jerusalem belongs to a Palestinian state and that any change of the status quo is unacceptable.
They need to learn that they lost the war and are in no position to make demands.
Israel’s de jure capital is Jerusalem. The seat of government is there.
Tel Aviv is the economic center.

Google says the people who were shot and killed were unarmed and that they had not broken through the fence. So basically, they were murdered by the IDF for protesting their disagreement with the US embassy being in Jerusalem.
