The Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM), which takes into account all government aid, fell to 9.1% in 2020 — a low since records began in 2009 — from 11.8% in 2019, according to the Census Bureau. The official poverty measure, which doesn’t reflect government support, rose to 11.4% in 2020 from 10.4% in 2019.
“This really shows the importance of the social safety net,” Liana Fox, poverty researcher at the U.S. Census Bureau, said at a press conference on Tuesday. “When we see differences in trends between the official poverty rate and SPM… that’s really the impact of our tax system and our non-cash benefits.”
So direct payments from the govt helped citizens out of poverty.
2020 was a ■■■■■■ up year that was totally mismanaged by government overreach and economically, was potentially devastating. I fully understand government financial assistance in this instance. Now let’s move on, get people employed and do this the right way.
If they destroy the buying power of the dollar, there goes the safety net. Some of the Scandinavian countries democrats wants to be like if they look closer while it’s true they are being taxed high they are also as a whole paying into it as a society to get that social safety net.
We don’t have enough people paying in and we are constantly importing more and more that has to be taken care of draining that safety net pushing up the debt with no end in sight.
