Deaths from despair in older white males in the United states

1992

Interesting on the 1988 map California red WV blue, hell almost everything was red in the 1988 map.

They voted Republican in 7 out of the 9 presidential elections from 1956-1988. That is hardly “solid Democratic”. The 2 maps you provided were anomalies because of Clinton

Yes. California was a solid Republican state up until 1992. We experienced the same trend in the late 80s that we see starting in Texas

You mean the Republican Party shifting further right and alienating what was previously their base?

That’s one way to look at it but this study from the NYT’s hardily a far right organization shows a different path of which the parties have shifted.

45-54 white non-college educated males.

The prime of you life.

Allan

College educated or no?

Allan

It was 1996 when the CEC really took off

California was voting Republican in 2000?

Also, I find it funny that there was a shift to the right by the Democrats in 2008 and they were still called “socialists”

It’s and interesting chart if you noticed in a small graph the two main British parties are below inside the graph as well.

If interested here is the full report, a good read but I think they relied on comparison with the right and left in Europe which our parties are historically different than.

Unfortunately, It’s behind a paywall. I will have to look at it next month.

Switch browsers if you haven’t already. I usually keep DuckDuckGo on standby for Wapo and NYT articles since you only get so many.

No. Had a nice trade though.

Good to hear.

When i was a kid Tn was mostly democrat. Senators, congress, State reps.

As the old Roosevelt dems died off we turned more and more gop.

Tn is hard core gop at this point. There’s no way in hell Trump could lose this state.

Memphis and Nashville are about the only blue spots.

Have the best job of my life currently. Retirement! :+1:

Given your age, you when you were young Democrats where conservatives, so it’s not surprising. It was pre CRA.

For me, there will be no retirement.

Way too young for that.

However I am going to relocate to Iowa when I leave my job with the big company and go to work at a job I am going to like doing.

Allan

You will get to retirement some day. When I was young i never thought i would get there either.

Has anyone suggested that Hispanics tend to have stronger family ties? Could be a big factor. Obviously lots of old white males have strong family ties, but I don’t think the percentages are as high overall.
