Wrong takeaway.
Really, people who were secure and now, because of failure or fate, are not - they might reasonably be expected to be drawn to a man whom the television had been telling them, for decades, was an against-odds winner.
It probably really helped that he also spoke the language of grievance which their narrower-market radio prophets had been cultivating for thirty plus years.
But, “deadbeats”? No. That’s some too-comfortable Manhattan smarm.
