there is little proof these efforts have had much effect. in fact, if the actual rate of infection is as high as these studies suggest, everything we’ve done once COVID was loose in the country was pretty much a waste of effort. if the rate of infection is in fact 50X whats reported… what infections did we prevent?

Due to some hospitals treating nothing but covid and extreme social distancing measures. We’d still be climbing exponentially if we went on with business as usual like with the flu.

The reality is that we are living a real life trolley experiment. There is no way to handle this that doesn’t produce death, either as an immediate consequence, or an indirect one. Don’t get it twisted, it’s all a matter of to which track do you want to flip the switch.

Indeed - it’s a trolley problem, but one where you know that your tribe (membership in which is a core part of your identity) really wants you to switch the track one way.

People will arrive at a conclusion on this and convince themselves that their tribal affiliation had nothing to do with it, even though acceptance of their tribe is one of the “bodies” on the track.
