I can’t even imagine the pressure both internally and externally on her. This is one zillion percent her choice and she knows the years of practice that went into this prior to this decision and she’ll continue to endure internal pain for making it. I for one, wish her nothing but thanks for the effort she made.

Was thinking about it as I watched it last night. Wasn’t she one of the girls assaulted by the coach? If she was, she gets a pass. Looked it up just now, she was. Not going to hold it against her for that mitigating reason. Not that she has any reason to care what I think.

It’s the unfortunate remnants of the antiquated way of viewing mental health. The idea that mental health issues are simply a “weakness” that can be overcome by will and strength. If she had broken her leg, would people be calling her a quitter? If she has an acute debilitating mental health issue all of the sudden she is? Why? Because you can “prove” a broken leg with an x-ray? She’s a decorated Olympic athlete that’s been on the world stage many times, she has more inner strength, drive and confidence than probably 99.9% of the people on Earth. This wasn’t the action of a quitter, it was the action of someone with a true health issue.

Luckily, the old way of thinking of mental health is dying off with those who still cling to it.

It’s amazing to me that conservatives, who would quit eating a foot long sub if they ran out of breath, are talking ■■■■ about the most elite athlete in the world. One of the most decorated women in gymnastics history.
