Maintaining a strong alliance is usually in a country’s best interest. But, when an alliance partner, and the main one at that, starts acting all unilaterally, the members of the alliance begin to wonder if they still have an alliance.

I don’t think this case has anything to do with Trade tariffs directly. Apparently, Ms. Wanzhou is a principal in a complicated fraud case in which it is alleged her company borrowed money from HSBC bank and laundered it through a subsidiary in order to sell products to Iran, in violation of U.S. sanctions.

The annoying part is I figure there’s a solid chance we’ll extradite the exec to the US and then she’ll get immediately traded back to China for some concession. We get the retaliation and der trumpenfuhrer gets to look magnanimous. Because that is precisely how US allies are treated under this regime.

Are we implying that there is 1 million black people who were just randomly picked up off the street and locked up for nothing else than being born black? Because this is what is happening in China.
