California state health insurance to cover sex changes for illegal immigrants

The Golden State is expanding its massive health care system this year, which means more taxpayer dollars will fund sex change surgeries for state residents, regardless of their citizenship status.

According to a memo first circulated in May 2022 and reported by the Daily Caller Foundation, California’s Medi-Cal covers costs for hormone therapy and procedures “that bring primary and secondary gender characteristics into conformity with the individual’s identified gender, including ancillary services, such as hair removal, incident to those services.”

Nearly 700,000 illegal immigrants between the ages of 26 and 49 qualify, as of Jan. 1, for these federal health care services, which will cost California taxpayers an estimated $3.1 billion. For those living in California illegally within this age range, it translates to approximately $4,058 per year in medical coverage subsidies funded by the state’s general fund.

“Gender affirming care is a covered Medi-Cal benefit when medically necessary,” the memo states. “Requests for gender affirming care should be from specialists experienced in providing culturally competent care to transgender and gender diverse individuals and should use nationally recognized guidelines.” . . .

Medi-Cal has extensive benefits of which gender affirming care is but one. The Fox News article is written in a way to give the impression that this is somehow a specially introduced benefit for illegal immigrants residing in CA.

If individual states want to provide health care coverage for all residents who meet the criteria then isnt that up to them?

Can’t recall what thread I said it in, but each time I see an article about Calif’s deficit, the number increases. $60billion? $80billion? Can’t recall the last number I saw, but it’s like they’re trying to pump it up to $100billion.

If you have any doubt about the authenticity or fairness oft he article you could try the version in Newsweek

Or that of the Colorado Springs Gazette

and you are correct.
Californian has the right to do anything it wants.

If it passes a stupid expensive law it will likely be discussed here and elsewhere.
Nothing on this forum is limited to “things someone is legally prohibited doing.”

Heck there have been thread about many legally-done things including things legally done by King Charles, by some loudmouth actor/actress, by a union or a corporation, by the state of Alabama etc… This thread is not at all unique in that regard.

It’s only money.

I wonder.

Are there advertisements in Lat American and Middle Eastern newspapers touting “come to California for a free sex change, free cancer care etc.”

Or do the cartels, coyotes and human smugglers advertise this only by word-of-mouth?

…and the California government doesn’t need to wonder much why taxpayers are leaving. This is beyond stupid. It’s criminal!

Speaking of criminals

SACRAMENTO (CBS SF/AP) – Shiloh Heavenly Quine, a 57-year-old convicted killer serving a life sentence in California, has become the first U.S. inmate to receive state-funded sex-reassignment surgery.

The prisoner’s attorneys told The Associated Press on Friday that California prison officials agreed in August 2015 to pay for Quine’s surgery.

Quine was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping and robbery for ransom and has no possibility of parole. . . .

“The Eighth Amendment of the US Constitution requires that prisons provide inmates with medically necessary treatment for medical and mental health conditions including inmates diagnosed with gender dysphoria,” Thornton said in a written statement.

If the inmate had a bad kidney, medically treating it would mean it’s removal. I’d equate the same treatment for this malfunctioning brain.

I guess I’m not getting it.

If they are here illegally, then they should be deported. Then it’s not a problem.

What am I missing?

I am not doubting the accuracy of the report but commenting on how the media is focusing on gender affirming care and the articles are not clearly stating that Medi-Cal provides access to a very wide range of medical benefits.

The biggest cost to Californians is not going to be any type of gender reassignment surgery but the access that will be given to ER and diagnostic services. But thats not as “sexy” (in the journalist sense) as sex change surgery.

Only a very small number (if any) of the new eligible population of about 700,000 are going to request gender medical services.

I think FOXNews did not remind us of what we already know because Journalism generally does not do that. (That would be like a cricket article reminding us what the batter does.)

In general it is good policy and good journalism
However I have sometimes gotten frustrated by that.

I was new in the town of Harrisburg, PA where Mayor Stephen Reed and Judge Vickie Chambers had an on going dispute. An article I read skipped the opportunity to tell me a lot of context and didn’t even tell me Stephen Reed was Mayor and Vickie Chambers was judge.

So, yeah, sometimes American journalism carries that too far, but i think in this case all three articles did things the same because that is the right way to do it.
