Baseball Great Pete Rose died today

Pete Rose has passed away. One of my connections with my dad as a boy was baseball. In my dads world it was Micky Mantle and later on Pete Rose. My dad played in a Church League softball league. As a kid I went with him to his games. My dad played all out, just like Pete Rose. In 1975 he let me stay up and watch that world series between the Reds and the Red Sox. Two of the greatest world series teams ever. The talent on those teams were amazing. 49 years later, it still seems a shame to me that baseball has not seen fit to allow him to be a hall of famer. I have always believed he should be a hall of famer…what do our other baseball fans think?

Especially since gambling on the sport is now legal. I don’t give a rip about baseball, and even I think he should have been admitted to the hall.

I’ve heard and understood for decades now that in MLB clubhouses there are rules posted

RULE #1: DO NOT BET ON BASEBALL

The guy is a liar and a cheat and probably should NEVER be in the HOF.

And if anyone deserves to be in the HOF, it should probably be the All-time Hits Leader.

They let in david ortiz, who reportedly tested positive for steroids, so they should probably let in all cheaters.

But my opinion is that rose and all other cheaters should not be allowed.

Hope that was clear.

Shoeless Joe Jackson will never be admitted to the Hall of Fame and neither should Pete Rose.

Gambling on baseball would be bad enough and MIGHT be forgivable, but betting on his own team is unforgivable.

Definitely a heck of a ball player.

This I don’t understand. If you bet on your team to lose that would be one thing, but as far as I know, he always bet on his team to win or am I wrong?

That’s what he said, but it’s unprovable.

It’s still against the rules for players and coaches to bet on baseball games.

He stated he never bet against his team, but that is his word only. It was never proven. And given that he denied gambling on baseball at all until 2004 AND given that he was a compulsive gambler, I am not inclined to accept his word any more than I would accept the word of a drug addict.

If it’s not proven, then he’s not guilty of it, legally.

All it would take would be one bookie’s records showing he bet against his team to prove it true.

It was clear, but not well informed. Rose may have broken the rules, but he was not a cheater. There was never any evidence that bet on the Reds to lose.

now that he is dead, he will be installed into the hall of fame.

i really didnt like him due to his infamous fight with Bud Harrelson in 1973 playoffs.

he was a hellva player however.

RIP.

Allan

According to the Dowd Report, and apparently rose’s own words in a 2007 interview on ESPN, you couldn’t be more wrong.

As an aside glad to see Safiel is OK from the storm.

Rose admitted to betting on the reds to the mlb commission in early 2000s. It was part of the report that was produced by mlb. He just denied betting on them to lose.

We got flooding and road outages in this area, but not as bad as the far west of the State, which got obliterated.

That is what is left of Interstate 40 in the far west of the State.

You mean other than his own admission? :man_shrugging:

“I bet on my team every night.”

Clear and concise. Rose bet on baseball. He does not appear to have thrown games, he always bet to win the game. But if MLB allows one type of cheater like Ortiz, then Rose should be in too. Rose bet as a manager, his numbers as a player are clearly HOF numbers.
