Baseball Great Pete Rose died today

Pete Rose gambled on baseball while he was a player and coach in the league. Big difference from fans voting on games.

It’s not that big of a difference because the popularity of each sport has grown exponentially due to …. Gambling

Every sport was stalling in one or another until things like FanDuel became legal.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing but it cant be ignored

Fans betting on games is not that different than players and coaches, who obviously have direct control of the outcome, betting on games? Huh?

Sorry. I misunderstood your position

Yes players betting on own team is bad. On own sport … who cares? My point is that mlb or any other major league has no leg to stand on as they owe their recent explosion to gambling

You would have no problem with Patrick Mahomes betting on this week’s Raiders v. Broncos game?

I don’t get your point. If MLB was trying to prevent fans from gambling on baseball, then yes, they would have no leg to stand on. But they’re not. They’re trying to prevent players and coaches from gambling, for very obvious and legitimate reasons.

It’s a meme, man.

Indeed. And I commented on it. Good recap!

I am fairly certain the nfl doesn’t either. Neither does the nba. The guy who just got banned form the NBA was only banned for betting on himself!

Oh and the whole thing with Ohtani - does anybody actually believe he knew nothing about the betting.

The MLB does not prohibit players or managers from betting on baseball with certain caveats. Cannot bet on their own teams or themselves or use illegal gambling.
This is the error people make about Rose too

Both the NFL and NBA ban players from betting on any league games and events.

The league has long maintained that players are not allowed to bet on NFL events. Its 2023 gambling policy states that players can never place, solicit or facilitate a bet — either directly or through a third party — on “any NFL game, practice, or other event, such as the Combine or Draft.”

The NBA runs mandatory education sessions about gambling for players, coaches, team personnel and referees. Betting on the NBA is prohibited for players, as spelled out in a player conduct memo distributed to teams and players. They cannot bet on games, competitions (like All-Star Skills competition) or events (like draft picks, contract signings, trades, awards, and coach hires) involving the NBA, WNBA, G League, NBA2K League and BAL; they also cannot participate in NBA fantasy sports that have cash prizes or offer winnings of value. They can bet on other sports.

“You may not participate in anyone else’s prohibiting betting, ask anyone to engage in prohibited betting on your behalf, or encourage anyone else to engage in prohibited betting,” the player conduct memo says. “You must avoid any involvement with prohibited betting.”

Seems unlikely to me.

Uh, yes, it certainly does.

Players can’t bet on baseball. The CBA is cut-and-dried on this, as if it weren’t already clear. Attachment 60 in the CBA spells out MLB’s sports betting policy and the very first prohibited conduct is “No Betting on Baseball.”

Players cannot bet on MLB games. Players cannot bet on minor league games. They can’t bet on youth games or high school games or college or international games. They cannot bet on skills competitions or home run derbies or anything of that sort. They can’t bet on the outcomes of events during games, like at-bats or a particular pitch or inning. You name it, if it involves baseball, they can’t bet on it. Players also are not allowed to place bets on baseball on their behalf or “assist” with bets made by others.

Fair enough. I was wrong. I personally don’t have a problem with players betting on their own sport. I understand the insider nature of the sport and the collusion that can take place as a result but allowing gambling but only some gambling seems hypocritical at best.

I don’t see it as hypocritical, it’s a security feature. Casino employees can’t gamble at their own casinos for the same reason.

You are right, I said that wrong. He said he only bet on his team to win and then did his best to make them win … which is entirely different from betting on them to lose and throwing the game to win his bet. But still, his confession was the only evidence.
