Baby Formula and Government Failure

Cool.

Why do Republicans not care about feeding babies?

The $28 million goes to the FDA for more inspections, preventing certain products from entering the US etc.

How does that help now?

Does every bill have to provide immediate help? It seems like republicans against improving formula inspections at the FDA.

Lol, yeah, that will stop mothers who can’t feed their babies from blaming Biden, good luck with that.

Ok.

Why are republicans against improving and speeding up formula inspections?

Maybe mothers will blame Biden for (checks notes) easing restrictions on importing formula.

President Joe Biden’s administration announced steps Monday to ease a nationwide shortage of baby formula, including reopening the largest domestic manufacturing plant and increasing imports from overseas.

The Food and Drug Administration said it was streamlining its review process to make it easier for foreign manufacturers to begin shipping more formula into the U.S.

Why does the FDA need 28 million more to do their job? Aren’t they already funded?

Yeah actually when the crisis is immediate and all the estimates we’ve heard from the experts are that it will be July before the shelves really start to see consistent stocks…

I think yes the need is immediate…unless you want to tell a bunch of hungry babies to just hang in there until July.

The FDA has lots of money… FDA Seeks $8.4 Billion to Further Investments in Critical Public Health Modernization, Core Food and Medical Product Safety Programs | FDA

“ For Immediate Release:
March 28, 2022
Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it is requesting a total budget of $8.4 billion as part of the President’s fiscal year (FY) 2023 budget – a nearly 34% ($2.1 billion) increase over the agency’s FY 2022 appropriated funding level for investments in critical public health modernization, core food safety and medical product safety programs and other vital public health infrastructure. The request includes $3.7 billion in budget authority – including an increase of $356 million, and $3 billion in user fees – an increase of $153 million. The request also includes $1.6 billion in mandatory funding to support the FDA’s ability to prepare for future pandemics.”

Despite being pretty well funded the FDA has drug its feet since last fall on the Abbott Plant issue…” “The report was submitted to FDA on Oct. 20, 2021. The FDA did not interview the whistleblower until late December 2021. According to news reports, FDA did not inspect the plant in person until Jan. 31, 2022, and the recall was not issued until Feb. 17, 2022,” Rep. DeLaura said in a release. “Why did the FDA not spring into action? Why did it take four months to pull this formula off of store shelves? How many infants were fed contaminated formula during this time, by parents who trusted that the formula they were buying was safe? How many additional deaths and illnesses were there due to FDA’s slow response?”. Outrage Grows Over FDA Reaction to Baby Formula Whistleblower | powderbulksolids.com

The FDA first heard about all of this in September…took no steps to deal with the shortages taking the plant off line would cause, and the plants won’t be providing formula until July. Abbott needed to do a better job of keeping its plant clean…but the Federal Government and in particular the FDA should have predicted and planned for the shortages the plant closure has caused.

Predicted and planned. When did you guys get so rational about what the executive branch should do when faced with a national crisis?

Better way late then never I guess.

Yep. It’s as if the private sector can’t do anything without big mommy government

Way way way late…Still not seeing results…let’s not get too excited over an announcement.

They need to actually make production and distribution happen.
