how come we are helping other countries with cattle, but not our own.
seems to me a huge mistake and bad policy.
i wonder why the current admin is basically hands off of this problem?

Because of the removal of “country of origin” labels we were probably already getting a huge amount of beef from Argentina that was just packaged over here.

The current administration is definitely not hands off. They are the very definition of Big Government doing this doing that, as noted in your article, but it is too scatter shot and too uncoordinated and too desperate and too much of each cabinet secretary doing doing doing too many things for any of it to ever work.
Zero free market stuff like conservatives always priced themselves on.

However, I agree with you that I would rather see anything given to foreign producers/shippers/manufacturers of … ANYTHING … be given to the same domestic counterpart instead.

Yes indeed. I know many.
For several extra steps of effort, I can get local steak from the local farms at around $15/lb. It’s over $21/lb at the grocery stores where it’s quick and convenient to get steak.
These “American Ranchers!” you’re invoking are the $21/lb guys with the illegal help. If they want my money, they need to get their dumbass act together. Hillbillies with pitchforks are outperforming them.

When this administration says they “inherited” a problem, what they really mean is that they “caused” the problem.

“Beef prices are being driven by the fundamentals I’ve talked about for months: the U.S. cattle herd is at a 70-year low, demand remains extremely strong, and it will take time for supply to rebuild,” Nate Rempe, the president and CEO of Omaha Steaks, told Nexstar. “Those factors, not politics, are what will keep upward pressure on prices into next year.”
Peel, speaking with Nexstar, said the cattle industry is inherently cyclical and usually self-correcting. (When inventory is high and prices are low, cattle producers liquidate herds; when inventory is low and prices are rising, cattle producers tend to reserve some of the female livestock for breeding to increase herd sizes.)
But Peel says the current cycle began in 2019, when herd sizes began to decline. Droughts in the following years certainly exacerbated the problem, but Peel also believes that uncertainty within the cattle industry — fueled by the Trump administration’s talk about importing beef, or open grazing land — might now be gumming up the works of the cyclical cattle production cycle.
And as expected, people who were complaining about tariffs are now complaining about him dropping tariffs. (Go figger.
