I have been critical of that aspect of Trump’s persona since he entered politics in 2015. I thought it was his Achilles heel. I was wrong, but it no longer bothers me. As they often said about Biden throughout his career … That’s just Trump being Trump.
While everyone else thrashes about on the ground about Trump and DEI I will get back to the accident.
It is now being reported that the controller handling the helo was also providing landing instructions to airliners. Apparently there are supposed to be separate controllers for these tasks. It is also being reported that the tower is supposed to have 30 personnel and only has 19.ATCs assigned.
I heard this AM a black hawk pilot say the thing that haunts him after watching the video is, why did the black hawk not change altitude or direction? IOW, were they not looking out the window and just blinding following the vector given them?
It does seem that a lot of good information is already available. What I’ve seen combined with what you mention seems to point to a cascade of human errors. Time will tell of there are solutions.
Read the article from the expert who talks about challenges of flying in a crowded airspace at night with night vision goggles.
From the article:
“And people find that hard to believe, but this giant aircraft at night is just two more lights added to all the other lights in the D.C. area,” he said.
Cardoso said that when he flew military helicopters at night in urban settings, he tended to take off his night vision goggles “because they washed out so much cultural lighting and became almost useless.”
We don’t even know if they were wearing them. All we know is the helicopter didn’t swerve to miss. That tells me they didn’t see the plane in the dead of night.
