What preposterousness is this? Who has posited that Johnson was anti slavery? Or that Southern Democrats hated slavery?
Where did you get the idea that a) Abraham Lincoln hated slavery or b) Andrew Johnson hated slavery?
Johnson was an odd bird…staunch ANTI-abolitionist and STAUNCH defender of states rights…however also a strong pro-Union advocate.
Lincoln thought slavery was morally wrong in that he believed everyone had the right to enjoy the fruits of their own labor. But he was not an abolitionist (in fact until the Emancipation Proclamation, most abolitionists did not like him), nor did he believe blacks should have the same rights as whites (indeed earlier in his life he, like Jefferson, favored the colonization idea as the final solution to the issue of blacks and whites).
But in GENERAL, more “liberal” people would be found in the ranks of the GOP and more conservatives would be found in the Democratic Party…especially the Southern Democratic Party. Hell their ideas of trying to preserve as much of the culture of the antibellum South as they could is a hallmark of what it means to be a conservative. Conservatives by and large believe in maintaining the “status quo” of societal and political institutions…they are rarely “revolutionaries”.
The shift of conservatism to be mostly in the GOP and less in the Dems began around the time of McKinley and it took several decades for the shift to be complete…even into the 1960s there were liberal “Rockefeller Republicans” and conservative “Dixiecrats”.
The point of this long treatise is to once again have to repeat what so many people don’t want to believe…the main philosophical bent of Democrats and Republicans has changed over their long history so to try and do things like blame slavery on “Liberal Democrats” is a silly game to play, and very very lazy intellectually.
And seriously, we see the roots of that in today’s debate. Explain to me why those who are most upset about what they want to call the “destruction of Southern heritage and history” identify mostly as conservatives. Explain to me why the Myth of the Noble Lost Cause, which was spun out of whole cloth by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in the 1890s, seem to identify as conservatives?
They had representation that far outweighed their population…especially in the Senate (and the 3/5 rule made it worse).
Much like today where we are very close to 70% of the Senate being selected by 30% of the population.

You arguing with these people reminds me of others arguing with flat-Eathers but worse because they learned it in history class in South. You not going to get people who are so far out touch with reality to see your point. They actually teach the crap the OP is spouting in schools down in the South. My brother moved down here in 2000 and his kids use come home with Textbooks that where written from the “lost cause” point of view. It really is a sickness down in South that should been stamped out after the Civil War. Now people in South worship another country that killed United States American soldiers.

What miraculous change in the Democrat attitude and treatment towards blacks occurred since the end of the civil war? The Democrats changed from conservative to Liberal you say? How did that help anyone? The fact is that Democrats controlled the South from the 1870s all the way through the 1960s and fought against freedom and equality for African Americans tooth and nail every single step along the way! Every Southern state throughout the 1960s had Democrat Governors. Every major city like Birmingham, Atlanta, Jackson, New Orleans, IOW, every major Southern city where the civil rights battles were primarily fought had Democrat mayors. So did most big Northern cities… Democrats also had control of Congress, the Senate and from Jan. 20th 1961 to Jan. 20th 1969, had control of the White House. And yet, DEMOCRATS DID SQUAT TO END RACISM! Until they were forced to…
How wonderful for the poor oppressed African Americans that the Democrats switched from conservative oppression through the term of William McKinley to Liberal oppression through the 60s and into today…The historical fact is that Democrats were in charge of what was going on in the states and cities, and yet Racism didn’t vanish because of it. In fact, these long held Democrat cities were, and still are poverty stricken, crime and drug infested hell holes, and today, with the idiotic call from the left to defund and abolish police, the crime rate has skyrocketed in these cities.
It would be very intellectually lazy to deny these facts, but I will give you the opportunity to explain how Republicans are actually responsible. What are or what have Republicans done to create the mess in inner cities? Who among Republicans is calling to, as Joe Biden said to a group of Black voters, “PUT Y’ALL BACK IN CHAINS?”
The race card is literally all the Democrats have to play. They have done absolutely nothing except create a bunch of entitlement programs that has made poor people, especially the African Americans whom they have opressed since 1865, dependent upon them. The Democrats play the race card every 4 years and tell African Americans things like " They’re going to take away your welfare!" Or the stupid crap Joe Biden spews, and then forget and forsake them for another 4 years. What did even Obama do to improve the lives of African Americans?
