Sigh. I was responding to your logic that “religion doesnt make laws, people make laws” to rationalize not being concerned about religion. This conversation is hopeless.
My theory is humans are the only animal to be aware of their upcoming death. In order to cope with such a heavy thought, people figured well, we just don’t die, there’s gotta be something!
A side benefit of people thinking they don’t really die is formation of cool clubs.
Most of these clubs use eternal life as the carrot to join them, plus a little cash wouldn’t hurt to help spread the word to keep people from ever dying, is it?
These clubs can provide a pretty nifty living by simply “spreading the word”, if one is in possession of the gift of gab.
You don’t ever die. The one who you paid keeps telling you don’t ever die. You die happy. They die rich. Everybody wins!
And that is why, over the years, people of faith have rightfully become suspicious of civil leaders who say we are doing something for God. We realize we are a ready-made community that others might wish to persuade, use, or control.
Not necessarily. However, it does seem to attract predators, and everyone a part of organized religion needs to be vigilant. We were warned of this at least two thousand years ago.
