What Is An American?

Arising from another discussion:

Watch the question.

What makes an “American”?

This diamond has many facets but one, is placing your country before self.

Nationism - the idea that nations should exist and be sovereign.

Just so I don’t forget.

Another one is either being born in the US or legally entered the US and applied and received citizenship?

That was why I said “watch the question”, citizenship is defined. Isn’t citizenship simply state recognition of being “American”?

Interesting. Would you say that is a requirement? Characteristic?

As taught by the greatest generation…yes…but it’s fading fast.

60% of which was drafted?

…and the ladies moved north and worked in the factories building the war machine.

I was 10 points high. Sorry.

I don’t think I agree that putting the country before self is what makes an American. Other nationalities do it as much as if not more than we do.

When the men came home, my great aunts moved back to Kentucky and Tennessee but my grandmother stayed and raised her children there…of which one, was my mother.

Can one be an “American” without being a citizen?

I agree but in the land of opportunity, there are many more potential opportunities to do so IMO. We are rich with opportunities.

I’m not following you.

Is a person who was raised here from a baby any less an “American” than a person who came here at 21 and was naturalized? More?

Is “American” about documentation or something deeper?

Must either be a tough question or everybody hates me.

Bingo.

I fundamentally disagree.

Do you have to be a citizen to be an American?
