The US does not have good track record in proxy wars. It lost the Vietnam War after it turned the fighting over to the South Vietnamese. It just lost the war in Afghanistan after it turned over fighting to the Afghan army.
The same fate is likely in Ukraine in coming months without introduction of large numbers of NATO combat troops. Perhaps that is why neocon pundits in liberal mainstream media are promoting the idea of the US fighting and winning WW3, even as any suggestion of negotiated settlement is shut down.
