Were there any surprises at all? The takeaways from the election results

I don’t think you’re wrong either.

History already rewritten? Fox was hardly the only news outlet predicting a red wave, virtually everyone was.

Well, look no further than the way they ALL forgot about how they were ALL squealing about stolen elections, SCOTUS tampering, Russian bots, etc., over every single election they’ve lost in the 21st century.

Same people who used to log on here every day to “prove” how BOOSH! was in on 9-11. They’ll deny that too.

The future success in politics is going to be all about growing and getting out your base. I would bet that over 90% of the vote is purely about voting for the particular party you want.

Slavery was never in the history of this country considered to be inclusive of a convicted felon being required to work in the prison laundry room, or being required as part of his sentence to work to reimburse his victim.
Clearly this is not the sort of forced work covered in the 13th amendment or it would have been ruled unconstitutional long ago.
There’s nothing here but the misuse of a word.

Trump was so gracious over DeSantis’ win. Most politicians would have just said congratulations.
Trump went the extra mile to say that he had gotten more votes in Florida during a Presidential year than DeSantis got during an off year.

Well this surprised me: https://twitter.com/mattgaetz/status/1590712327669952516?s=46&t=UXVn9w3bq6FMr59E6EGYCw

Gaetz calling McConnell, McCarthy and Ronna failures. MI wonder what he has up his sleeve?

Pretend it’s tobacco. Maybe even why they recently raised the age of smokers to 21

That’s the play they are going to make for leadership. It’s all gas. McCarthy is the next speaker.

I have a feeling that Gaetz and MTG think that they are going to run the show. And it will be interesting to see how much leash McCarthy gives them.

All the punditry I am hearing reverses that equation, and puts McCarthy at their mercy

Abortion issue still would have provided headwinds, but yeah, it would have helped.

I agree with how close we were to real chaos. Pence gets in the car for example, and is whisked away for ‘safety’…vote doesn’t get certified…then what?

I was reading about a congressional race here in Colorado for a recently carved congressional district. Demographically, any GOP candidate should have been a shoo in. Instead, the result is a nail biter, too close to call. Analysis shows the difference was that the GOP candidate failed to focus on the normal GOP agenda such as low taxes, strong economy, etc… Instead, the GOP candidate focused on Trump’s failed reelection.

I believe that is a microcosm of why the trumpeted red wave failed to materialize.

A. Without certification, no one is declared President. Trump declares a vacancy and moves in with the national guard to,take control. Members of congress are declared traitors.

Or

B. Congress meets the next day and certifies. Some nut challenges the validity of doing this and the courts toss out the suit. Everything follows as normal.

That is a major reason. It’s possible to put up with an egomaniacal bully when he seems to,deliver. We are past that now and Trump needs to be informed it’s time to salvage as respectful a retirement as he can, now.
Abortion issue is an anchor too. I understand that if one believes that it is murder to destroy as soon as conception occurs, that is going to be a greater issue than anything else. For everyone else, we need to elect national candidates that simply say this issue belongs at the state level and is not an issue for them.

Boebert?

Yeah, I agree to an extent. Maybe we disagree to re: the extent of the difference that would make.

IMO, the reason the GOP - the traditional GOP, the people who represent the issues and positions you are speaking to - have long since realized these positions are not in fact big winners.

This is why the GOP morphed into the party of family values - a position somewhat antitehtical to ‘small government conservatism’. they recognized their positions were losing favor and they needed the religious voting block.

This is also why Trump has been so hard to quit…they need the MAGA base, even if they like to storm the capitol now and then, to gain power.

So..what was my point? Oh yeah…yes, part of the mid term was, whack jobs spending energy talking about 2020 were rebuffed by voters, so too was the anti-choice, anti-social spending, lower taxes for all, slash spending policies of the GOP.

IMO.

It’s hard to prove of course. But outside of a cult of personality like Trump, the GOP doesn’t have a message that resonates consistently.

Yes to Boebert.

Two compelling reasons there should have been a red wave.

The economy is in the tank. Traditionally the party in power gets the blame and pays the price at the polls.

Traditionally the party in power loses lots of seats in the mid-terms.

Both of those combined should have resulted in a massive red wave.

Counter that with Trump’s obsession about relitigating the 2020 election and you have the unfolding GOP failure to motivate their base. For the first time in my life, I stayed home this year. I simply couldn’t bring myself to participate in the mid-terms. I strongly believe I’m not in the minority in that regard.
