I know you’re trying hard, but he didn’t say that. He said something no one has ever said before, something he has never said before, on the very first day he of his campaign against a black opponent.
But there is zero basis for morphing his statement of monkeying around with the economy into a reference to his opponents race. In fact, it is a little questionable and insulting to interpret it that way. Monkey has a meaning other than a racial epithet. In fact, 99% of the time the word is used it does not mean that.
Of course there is. Seems to me the basis is he wants libs to accuse him of being racist while he plays the victim, drumming up hatred against the left.
Still waiting on when he ever used the “monkey” phrase before.
I am too…but it is an odd thing how many are willing to go to the wall over this being a common colloquialism (it’s not)…rather than admit he misspoke.
Maybe they are really worrying about freudian slips and dog whistles after all.
Not sure I want to wade in on this, but what the hell. Just thinking of contextual examples.
There are times when my daughter does something sly or clever, and I’ll refer to her as a “sneaky monkey.” Don’t know where I got that, I just started using it when she was a toddler and it stuck as a term of endearment for her.
I would not feel comfortable referring to a black friend or their children with that same term, precisely because in the past whites used terms like “ape” and “monkey” to dehumanize blacks. It’s simply a matter of being aware of our history and refusing to even go there, in much the same way I would never refer to a black male as “boy.” Even if done innocently, it evokes a negative past.
And again, in the particular incident that inspired this thread I don’t think the guy was intentionally racist or even trying to dog whistle. It was just a dumb thing to say.
