WAR in Ukraine, Putin approves initiation of special military operation (Part 1)

Really? Russia is world’s largest wheat exporter…also one of the worlds largest beef exporter as well.

Yes…and we helped them modernized over last couple decades.

Yeah, take a wild guess who Ukraine exports food to.

Russia grows about 50 percent more wheat then United States does.

Russia beef production is larger then Canada and growing. 5th largest pork.

Fair enough. Much better point.

As with all global commodities, just because a country is a net exporter does not make one “commodity independent”.

Russia still needs Ukrainian wheat. Quite possibly one of the main causes of this conflict.

Yeah I come back to that too.

NATO, Soviet empire, Nazis bla bla bla. Putin wanted more arable land as well as Ukrainian mineral, coal and gas deposits.

The whole thing seems like a pretty old school resource grab invasion. The whole buffer state is important but perhaps secondary to those main aims?

And the water…

That’s why they aren’t destroying the transportation network or flattening cities like they’re Grozny. They need that ■■■■ mostly intact.

The minerals is a huge thing as well.

A lot of stuff high tech civilizations rely on- most of these are in the Donbass.

No…energy.

That too.

All of it.

The Russians have been stealing Ukrainian wheat so we know they need it.

India and Africa mostly.

How could the war in Ukraine impact global food supplies? - Our World in Data.

Russia may want Ukraine’s wheat, but they do not need it.

No! They do not need it. Wheat is valuable. That’s why they are stealing it. Plunder and war go hand in hand.

I don’t know they must not need steel because they leveled Mariupol with one of the biggest steel plants in Europe. Kharkov looks bad we well, it doesn’t seem the Russians have a problem with demolishing cities Ukraine might just be a bigger target and harder to do that than in Grozny was which was completely surrounded, and most of the world didn’t care at the time about Grozny which for whatever reason everyone cares about the Ukraine war.

Remember … we are talking about a people who destroyed their own cities and scorched their own fields to starve out Napoleon when he invaded. They did much the same thing to the Germans. Doing that in Ukraine comes naturally to them.

They should have never implemented lend lease and let the Germans finish the Soviets off. At least they would killed each other off.

In hindsight, perhaps. At the time, keeping Germany from taking Russia’s vast energy resources was more important than speculation as to what Stalin would do after we defeated Hitler.

When even Kremlin TV turns against you…

Needless to say this dude has balls of steel to go on air with this kind of talk

"And considering that there is European aid will fully come into effect, so a million armed Ukrainian soldiers needs to be viewed as a reality of the very near future. And we need to take that into account in our operational and strategic calculations, that the situation in this regard for us will frankly get worse.”

Mmmm hmmm…but Ukraine joining NATO absolutely did threaten Russia enough for war.

Putin signaled on Monday that Finland and Sweden’s decision to join NATO is one of relative unimportance, and does not constitute a danger to Russia.

"Expansion at the expense of these countries does not pose a direct threat to Russia,” he said.
