WAR in Ukraine, Putin approves initiation of special military operation (Part 1)

Erdogan has his own aspirations. He is a Sunni Islamist, has been one all of his adult life. And has his own vision of a restored empire.

Ya that isn’t happening, I think secretly NATO is laughing about that other than the nuclear weapons. They can’t even manage to advance anymore in the Ukraine much less start a new front in Poland which is a NATO country.

Battle for Kharkiv “won.”

We’ll see, but that’s only 30 miles from Russia.

That’s like us getting stonewalled at Toronto.

Bummer for the Bear.

Is the DOD tacitly acknowledging that Russia has already won the war in Ukraine?

Secretary Austin has reportedly asked his Russian counterpart for an immediate cease fire. Earlier Austin had said that the goal of the war is to weaken Russia severely, and General Milley said that the war was likely to last years.

Why ask for a cease fire when your side is “winning” but still so far from the stated objectives?

McConnell flew to Kyiv with a senate delegation to meet with Zelensky. GOP showing up.

…

U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell lead a Senate delegation to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Saturday.

The meeting was “a powerful signal of the two-party support of Ukraine by the United States’ Congress, as well as the American people,” Zelenskyy said in a Telegram post that was translated by NBC News.

Yes, they have to pass the $40 billion slush fund before another Afghanistan-style debacle makes it irrelevant.

Why is Austin asking for an immediate cease fire if the objective of the war is to weaken Russia so it can never attack Ukraine again?

So people stop dying.

A cease fire and a negotiated settlement would save thousands of lives. But a negotiated settlement would lead to a loss of territory which Ukraine won’t abide. With Ukraine pushing Russia out of Kharkiv and back to the Russian border in the East, they have no incentive to stop fighting.

why did russia finally take the call after refusing to for 81 days?

gods man, your assessments here come straight off putin’s desk.

Ukrainian forces “appear to have won” the battle of Kharkiv after they were able to expel Russian troops from around the city, a U.S. defense think tank said Friday.

A report from the Institute for the Study of War said Russian forces had not attempted to hold their ground against Ukraine’s counterattack around Kharkiv over the past several days.

the problem for ukraine is in the south where a couple “ukranian” generals appear to have not really tried to stop the invasion in the beginning. Ukraine can do one thing to break russias hold in the south… take melitipol.

Yeah the South will be a whole 'nother ballgame. Much harder work for the Ukrainians. We shall see.

Almost certainly Ukrainian PsyOps but my spidey sense tells me that things are crumbling for Putin.

It’s nonsense. The guys in line to replace him are equally hardliners. It’s not like this a coup to free navalny. If anything it’s just replacing an apple with an apple.

Saving lives was not on Austin’s list objectives a few weeks ago, and NATO killed serious negotiations for a cease fire back in March.

If anything, the prime objective has been to kill as many Russians as possible even if that results in Ukrainians dying in a bloody insurgency. That was openly stated back in January:

One person familiar with the program put it more bluntly. “The United States is training an insurgency,” said a former CIA official, adding that the program has taught the Ukrainians how “to kill Russians.”

Does the defeat of the Azov forces in Mariupol have anything to do with the change?

Ok what does that have to do with a ceasefire.

Perhaps. But maybe a hardliner with more strategic sense. Any armchair general with half a brain could tell you that invading Ukraine was insane. I’d be happy to go back to evil meddling Russia instead of evil megalomaniacal messianic Russia.

a temporary solution to a not so temporary disaffection. whoever they install, will not be there long.

. . . according to Ukraine’s military intelligence chief.

Mushrooms and brownies must be on the menu in Kyiv.

Either that or they enjoy creating more myths.

Bill I never quite understand your intense cheerleading for Russia. Do you have roots there? Or support Putin’s policies? Or maybe a Ukrainian did something mean to you? Joking there- but genuinely interested.
