I would actually like to make a correction. Harris identifies as an “African-American”. Her skin color obviously racially categorizes her as “black”. But being of Eastern Indo and Jamaican heritage wouldn’t claiming to be “African” be factually incorrect?
My Italian immigrant grandparents were classified racially on their immigration forms at Ellis Island as “Southern Italian” a term we found out meant of lesser class and discriminated against in Italy. Southern Italians were of peasant class, largely less educated and refinement than the blue nosers of Northern Italy. Can we be considered as a race “southern Italians”?
