Venezuela-Guyana Border Dispute

Haven’t seen any topics on this but this might be something people should keep an eye on. Not an expert in any way, but I’ve been reading articles about it the past few weeks because of this Venezuelan referendum they’re voting on in a couple days.

Hopefully nothing comes of this but Brazil seems to be taking precautions.

Brazil’s push to move more military resources north comes amid rising tensions between Venezuela and Guayana over an oil-rich region known as the “Esequiba,” which constitutes over two thirds of Guyana’s total land mass.

That doesn’t bode well

If you look at the map of Guyana, Venezuela wants everything west of the Essequibo River, literally 2/3rds of the total land area of Guyana. The Essequibo River is marked by the dashed line.

So obviously Guyana can’t protect themselves from Venezuela, I’m just not versed in the topic enough to know if Brazil would defend Guyana. And if Brazil would need help. Or if the Organization of American States(of which we are a member) would step in.

Oh goody! Some more brown people we can bomb.

I mean French Guyana is in the middle of all that nonsense. No doubt France would get involved if it was threatened. French Guyana is a part of Metropolitan France. They elect delegates to both the French Assembly and the Senate. It’s a part of France.

I don’t think the OOAS has a military component. It’s a diplomatic and economic organization.

It would surely merit an emergency meeting. But militarily speaking I don’t think it has any teeth. It would have to be an ad hoc coalition built from scratch for military intervention.

Granted we don’t need to get involved to that extent. The US big military nor the American people are really ready for such an adventure so soon after Afghanistan.

If things go down we should limit our involvement to diplomacy and acting as mediator.

God I hope not. That’s the last thing that needs to happen.

America needs another post-Vietnam mental rebuilding. We are in no shape to go fighting a big war like that would be if ■■■■ hits the fan.

Is Venezuela even capable of militarily defending itself, much less launching an invasion and fighting Brazil?

Typically speaking when a country’s economy goes to ■■■■ their military goes to ■■■■■

The Venezuelan military is poorly equipped and trained.

Unfortunately, the Guyana military is all but non-existent, less than 8,000 active duty and reserve combined.

Brazil would likely step in and that would be it for Venezuela, however.

Wonder if Brazil would go all the way to Caracas and collapse the regime in a situation like that? Or would they just expel the Venezuelans and set up a DMZ on the Guyana-Ven border?

They might just be willing to take the fight to Caracas. A lot of people in South American are just DONE with the Bolivarian Republic.

The US is in no shape to fight any size battle, much less a war.

Not rooting for anything. Just bringing up a topic that I think is interesting for discussion. As the forum was intended. One that hadn’t been brought up. For intelligent discussion.

I think you’ve said this before. What metrics are you using to say this? I’m not saying you’re wrong but you are very adamant about this so I’m curious as to your evidence. Are you able to provide it because that would help me understand your point of view much better. Thanks!

It is a pity this new isolationist mindset was not in place from the 1980’s to early 2000’s.

We could have avoided Lebanon, Gulf War I, Gulf War II and Afghanistan completely.

Kinda think Gulf War I would have happened regardless. But that’s my opinion. And people here don’t want to talk about Lebanon. It doesn’t fit with certain Reagan mythology.

That’s a long-standing dispute. Notice the western border as we know it is depicted with dashes as well. Quite a few other dash-line boundaries on that map in the whole region.
