“We’re done with the funding of the Ukraine war business. We want to bring about a peaceful settlement to this thing,” Vance told Fox News’s Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures". . .
“Americans, I think, are sick of continuing to send their money, their tax dollars of this particular conflict. But if the Europeans want to step up and actually buy the weapons from American producers, we’re OK with that, but we’re not going to fund it ourselves anymore,” Vance continued. https://thehill.com/homenews/5445500-vance-done-funding-ukraine-war-business/
Businessmen know about the sunk-cost fallacy, and sometimes it is necessary to cut the losses no matter how much has already been invested.
Is that what is going on with the Trump administration and Ukraine?
The reality is that the US weapons stocks and NATO stocks in Europe are already at critically low levels, so production capacity has to be split between Ukraine, Israel, NATO allies, and the US military. That is why the Pentagon paused shipments to Ukraine back in July. The weapons just are not available to send without years of lead times.
It was clear that production was far below usage even after less than a year of war. Since then Russian production has greatly increased, so the problem is far worse now. Here is a report from a DC-based think tank in January 2023 for background:
The question is whether Trump will end up following through with Vance’s stated policy. Neocons and their allies in Europe dearly want to create a pretext for direct war between the US and Russia.
It looks like the vast majority of Ukrainians agree with Vance.
The fresh Gallup poll found that just 24% support continuing the fight until achieving a military victory, which is a stark reversal from views held at the start of the war more than three years ago.
