“No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.”
IDK, I don’t think it’s a smart move by Trump, but the argument that it’s unconstitutional or impeachable is a weak one.
This is as straightforward as it could be. It doesn’t have to even be a profit. Any money taken, profit or not, is an emolument. It’s incredible you would doubt that. Look up what “emolument” means if you have doubt.
This is not hard folks. I worked for years in a taxpayer paid position. It was drilled into us at all times that we were not ever to use our positions for personal financial gain.
What would you all think if your town mayor directed that all town meetings be held at his personally owned restaurant, that all tools and equipment for departments be bought at his hardware store, that all office supplies be purchased at his wife’s supply store?
This is not hard people. It is unethical for him to direct traffic to ANY of his own businesses. Ever.
None of you would put up with it on the local level, but there’s Trump doing it in plain sight, and y’all just limply shrug and look away.
Spent of his own money on what? How the ■■■■ do you know he hasn’t made a profit as president? Have you seen his tax returns?
Self-dealing is like the prototypical form of public corruption. It is everywhere and always bad. That you folks are defending it as totally reasonable and above board while making ■■■■ up about investigating corruption in Ukraine is just pathetic.
Anyone with common sense knows that this is just lining Trump’s pockets.
The rooms may be at cost but what about the food, etc. And all the free publicity that he desperately needs. (Assuming that the place is in good shape and not run-down…)
“At cost” is irrelevant, even if we were shown the financials (don’t hold your breath). The emoluments clause covers ANYTHING of value, not just those gifts that are profitable. Why do you think elected officials report everything of value they receive from a foreign donor?
Question for you, imagine a President Hillary hosting the G7 at the Clinton Foundation HQ and saying, “well, we’ve hosted foreign leaders before and know how to do it. There’s no better place.”
Would you be ok with this?
