A “dissident” faction associated with the Irish Republican Army claimed responsibility Tuesday for a series of “letter bombs” that left the United Kingdom on edge last week.

“A dissident Republican group calling itself the ‘IRA’ claimed responsibility on Tuesday for letter bombs sent to buildings in London and the University of Glasgow last week,” reports Reuters.

“White postal bags holding small bombs were sent to London’s Heathrow and City airports and Waterloo, the capital’s busiest train station, on March 5. One device caught fire when opened but caused no injuries and services continued at all three hubs,” adds the report.

A similar device was also sent to the University of Glasgow in Scotland.

The small explosives stunned residents in both the United Kingdom and Ireland; reminding locals of the widespread violence that rocked the region before the Northern Ireland Peace agreement in 1998.
