A Police Department in the United Kingdom came under fire over the weekend after asking local communities to report “non-crime hate incidents” that included “offensive and insulting comments online.”

The South Yorkshire Police Department posted the message on social media Sunday, saying “In addition to reporting hate crime, please report non-crime hate incidents, which can include things like offensive or insulting comments, online, in person or in writing. Hate will not be tolerated in South Yorkshire. Report it and put a stop to it #HateHurtsSY

The comments caused a stir on social media within minutes, with users asking the Department how they planned to crackdown on “insulting” language throughout the region.
