I do a boneless chop. Pick up a pork loin from Sam’s for $15-20, cut it into chops and vacuum seal them. Makes about 7-8 packages of 6. There’s only my wife, son and I, so I have leftovers for lunch the next day after pork chop night.
I would venture to guess that less people were going out to eat, and there’s an exorbitant amount of waste in those industries. Heinz always said it was the ketchup left on the plate that made a profit.
From AI:
In Alabama, a significant portion of farmers are white men, largely due to the state’s demographics and history, but it’s important to note that many farms in Alabama now rely heavily on migrant workers, often Hispanic, to fill labor shortages, particularly because many local white men are not willing to do the physically demanding farm work required; this issue became especially prominent after Alabama passed strict immigration laws that led to a decline in migrant workers available to farms.
Key points to remember:
Majority white farmers: Historically, most farmers in Alabama have been white men.
Migrant worker reliance: Due to labor shortages, many Alabama farms now depend on migrant workers, primarily from Mexico, to perform field work.
Immigration law impact: Alabama’s strict immigration laws have exacerbated the labor shortage on farms, making it difficult to find local workers willing to do the demanding agricultural work.
I just turned 60 recently…the aches and pains are more frequent, and recovering from injuries takes longer. I quit smoking 20 years ago, eat more veggies and fruit, less meat, and try to stay away from ultra processed food and sugar. So many things can be solved by changing one’s diet. I still enjoy a Ribeye, and a loaded burger NOT from any fast food places. I make my own, or go to a nice restaurant. Also, I was never a big drinker…although I do enjoy a glass of wine, a few times a week, and a well made Manhattan. Cannabis has been my choice for a high…but now I take a much smaller hit…at night before bed…I get a little high, but not truly stoned.
Thanks…I was not always this conscious of my health…quitting smoking was a no brainer…but the change of diet has really helped…I like to play tennis and golf…need to be in decent shape to do both…(moreso with tennis).
Not a red herring
point is when we had insufficient coders we raised their wages until Americans did the job. (We could kept paying low wages and eventually would gotten Chinese and Indians.)
The same could happen with almost any job.
As I said, my entire town relies on legal j-1 visa workers.
Missing in all of this is what they pay the migrant workers, and what they offer the white men not willing to work. Of course Americans won’t do the demanding agricultural work for what they pay the migrants.
Black and white women used to be maids in hotels. Black and white men used to work the roofing and landscaping industry back in the 80s. It’s all migrants now. Are they also jobs American won’t work? Back in 1986 your average worker in landscaping made 9.50 an hour to start. That’s why they use migrants now.
In construction, you’re average laborer makes 25-30 dollars an hour. That’s as hard of work as you’ll ever get, and white men do it.
On average labor costs are 15-25% of cost of constructing a home.
(Less when we consider the land purchase price.) We could give a 50% pay raise to every construction worker and new homes would either rise about 7% in price or shrink about 7%i n size.
