Defamation is hard to prove. George had to know he was telling lies, and they could prove it. Or else he wouldn’t be settling.

Stephanopoulos was adamant he would not back down from his comments, even going so far as to tell late-night host Stephen Colbert he would not be “cowed out of doing my job because of a threat.”
“Trump sued me because I used the word ‘rape,’ even though a judge said that’s in fact what did happen,” Stephanopoulos said in May. “We filed a motion to dismiss.”
Trump was not found liable for rape, but federal Judge Lewis Kaplan wrote in a ruling that although Carroll failed to prove those accusations, it does not mean that she failed to prove that Mr. Trump ‘raped’ her, as many people commonly understand the word ‘rape.’”
defiance vs issuing a correction probably didn’t help.
Yeah that’s a brain dead ruling that’s par for the weaponized court system….
She failed to prove he raped her, but he did it because the judge said so.
