Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau struck a positive tone when asked to comment on President Trump’s new US-Mexico Trade Agreement Tuesday, saying he was “encouraged” by the rapid progress in recent weeks.

Trudeau was speaking in Montreal when he weighed-in on Trump’s move to “terminate” NAFTA and forge a bilateral trade deal with Mexico, saying “We have been encouraged by the progress made by our NAFTA partners over the past weeks. This is an important step to moving forward on renegotiating and improving NAFTA.”

“The team in Washington is digging into the progress made and looking at what the next steps are. We will engage in a positive and constructive way, as we always have been, and look forward to ultimately signing a deal, as long as it’s good for Canada and good for middle-class Canadians,” Trudeau said.

The President unveiled the US-Mexico Trade Agreement from the Oval Office Monday, praising the pact is one of the “largest trade deals” in history.
