Because of course they didn’t.
They probably also didn’t report that this “criminal illegal from Ecuador” was not, in fact, trying to elude capture, nor did he abandon his kid, but had applied and was following all the established rules for asylum seekers.
In fact if all of the above pans out, it is likely that ICE, in order to meet its quotas, was once again taking advantage of people that follow the rules (as has happened many many times now, documented) because it’s easy to predict when they are going to show up in places where they can then be picked up.
So much for “if you’re trying to get into the country in the right way, we want you to come here”.
