While I would tend to agree, I will say conservatives’ general reluctance to speak out against Donald and Trumpism is making it more difficult not to see them as co-conspirators in the Age of Idiocy.
One of the more disappointing things about this Presidency is seeing Republicans that I disagree with, but did see them standing by their beliefs for principled reasons completely abandoning all of that… and for Donald Trump of all people.
I suppose that’s the most curious thing. To discard what they once held as sacrosanct and above reproach, to adopt the worst qualities of the ideology they abhor, and all for what? Donald Trump - an amoral elitist con man of low cunning and purely selfish motivations.
The GOP brand is now more tainted than a Trump steak left in a warm corner for three months.
If there weren’t at least a few examples of those who do, I might despair.
There are some on this board. Others in the public sphere that surprise and hearten me, like Bill Kristol.
I get your point, though. There are some who claim not to be Trumpists, or not to be Republicans, who can be known by their fruits, who despite their protestations to the contrary spend the vast majority of their utterances defending the President.
Funny that I never recall you being a “Conservative”. The fact that you though repugs were Conservative says it all. It was Repugs that created Trump. They created the conditions for Trump to run.
Back around June 2016 I created a thread about Republicans created Trump, from foreign interventionism to selling America out to Chinese, to open borders to taxation, from special interest to imposing intrusive laws without any regards to our Constitution or the BoR’s. And yes goverment spending too.
Next day after I started that thread Hannity our host went on about 40 minutes or more expressing those very same ideas and concerns…that Night Hannity spent the first 10 minutes or so on his television show.
Trump is not a Conservative in classical sense…never was or will be. But in around about way…he’s done more for Conservatives then repugs ever did.
And most important as I said about 4 years ago here, Trump is prepping the battle field for a real Conservative to come along…providing we don’t elect another Bush senior in 2024.
It’s at times like this I really really wish we had the old board around.
I’ll just say this - just because some republicans have traveled so far from conservatism that they can’t recognize conservatives, that doesn’t change the fact that I am conservative.
