Big issues for my union the last few years have been a minimum of 8 hrs rest between shifts.
Fair promotions based on merit instead of good ole boys club.
Increasing staffing as we are currently down about 20% from just a few years ago even though our workload has increased by as much. This ties into why the rest issue is such a big deal since we are being forced into mandatory overtime so much.
Weād all love more pay and better benefits but those havenāt been our primary concerns either.
It has been building for a whileā¦ I work in making TV and Moviesā¦ but there is a growing consensus that working back to back 16 hour days for 70ish hours a week is no way to live.
The various Locals have to be willing to present a unified front on this so the production companies canāt play regions off of each other for a race to the bottom like they have in the past.
I agree. But you know, how else can we subvert the institutions that fight for blue collar americans if we donāt pass legislation that undermines their effectiveness?
Could it be that Unions have just outlived their usefulness? In their heyday Unions represented about 30-35% of the workforce, they now represent about 10% of the workforce. Iāll admit Iām probably biased in this regard as my experience with unions over the years has not left me enamored of their practices or attitudes.
Well, maybe. But the fact that wages for blue collar americans are more or less stuck, and things like health care costs and costs of living continue to rise, and meanwhile, US corporations are more profitable than ever, I would suggest they are still needed.
