A new report from the United Nations shows an estimated 2.3 million Venezuelans have fled the country’s crumbling economy since June 2018, with roughly 7% of the population migrating to nearby nations to find food, water, and medical supplies.
According to the Washington Post, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters his agency believes over 2 million individuals have exited Venezuela; a country of approximately 32.8 million people.
“U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters that those fleeing — about 7 percent of Venezuela’s 32.8 million people — cite lack of food as the main reason for leaving. U.N. humanitarian officials report that 1.3 million of those who fled were ‘suffering from malnourishment,’” he said.
Venezuela’s economy has crumbled in recent years when dropping global oil prices crushed the once-prosperous nation, with inflation topping 1,000,000% and a dozen eggs costing millions of Bolivares.
