As the economic crisis continues to ravage the oil-rich nation of Venezuela, the country’s hospital patients and elderly are faced with a brutal choice: stay and receive limited medical care or go home and scavenge for food.
According to the AFP, hospitals across Venezuela are rapidly running out of edible food suitable for human consumption; dishing out plates of “starchy rice” to patients with compromised immune systems and other illnesses.
“I eat whatever they give me,” said one patient suffering from Diabetes. “In the evening, they serve you another arepa – a small, skimpy one.”
“That is hardly enough for a small child,” said a hospital staffer.
The National Hospital Survey released a stunning report earlier this year that said 96% of Venezuela’s hospitals “failed to feed their patients adequately, or do not feed them at all.”
