Hi, please don’t jump down my throat. I was just wondering if employers here are having an equally frustrating time trying to recruit employees as applicants are finding work.
So people don’t call me lazy- I interviewed last Monday for a job and they are still reviewing applicants. Still applying. I’m making sure now to apply to a job that uses my degree. I’ve seen so so much competition with other jobs. Plus I feel guilty about taking that job away from a 16 yr. old who either is helping support their family or wants to get an early start in the corporate world.
Here in South Florida the trades are hiring anyone. Being in the industrial service industry for 34 years ( up to retirement) working federal, state and local municipal contract work up north I find the level of trade competence and customer service to be ■■■■■
Guess I’m either spoiled or my standards are too high?
Be patient, it can take time for employers to go through the recruitment process. I recently had to hire an additional 10 full time employees, reviewed 200 resumes and interviewed nearly 50 people. Took me a few weeks but would have taken me longer if I had not just worked crazy long hours interviewing candidates etc. we work with a recruitment vendor but when I am hiring for my team I want to make all the decisions so its one of the rare times when I micromanage the process.
Got 10 great experienced new hires so it was worth it.
I’m sorry to hear about competence of coworkers and customer service. At least the field isn’t saturated, and I think that you’re going to see an uptick of applicants for trades- Gen Z is becoming more interested in trade school than college. I am seriously looking at going to school for MA or phelbotomy- I just need the money.
I’m cooking at home and saving on groceries, so I’m going to save that money and put it towards tuition for school. I do have student loans, but maaybe it would be worth it to get a technical degree if that meant I could get a job quicker?
I have a friend who works for a large builder. They tried recruiting for a receptionist but could not find one until they raised the starting pay to 65K. For this area, that is a hell of a lot of money.
I’ve advertised for field helpers. I’ve seen them come in with face tattoos, nose rings, etc. No way I am sending them to a job site or client’s home representing my company looking like that.
We use an employment service and have gotten some good employees. We’ve also gotten some bad ones. The last one they sent us was a meth head.
I hate to point out what should be the basics, but if you are clean, presentable, present yourself well and have the motiviation to do the job an employer will look closely at hiring you. Experience has to start at the bottom even with an education in the field.
