I’m surprised that there hasn’t been a thread on it yet, but FX’s Shogun is an utterly sensational adaptation of James Clavell’s novel. Masterfully crafted and acted, it’s a must watch for anybody with a smidgen of interest in Japanese history.
On my to watch list. Currently watching Series 2 of From on MGM. Great horror show but I am hoping we start to get some answers to the various plotlines.
That’s another fave.
Yeah, it’s really good.
One of the best series I’ve seen lately
I guess I need to watch this. Is this set in the Tokugawa era or in War period (When Oda Nobunaga ran around and killed enough people to create a the Tokugawa Shogunate in the first place). Or is it set it before all that?
It’s the very start of the Tokugowa period
Ah the consolidation period. One of the most defining periods in Japanese history. Lots of folks were getting ran through with swords at the time. I think Nobunaga had already been assassinated at that point.
Toranaga is loosely based on Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Ah the key lynchpin who gave final birth to the Shogunate because he was the last man standing.
And I think he was born a commoner.
