Senate Republicans Tell Trump: No Tariffs on Mexico

More likely his ego is simply incapable of acknowledging the facts right in front of him. Same reason he tweets out that were it not for the media he’d be up by 15 no-wait-25-points. It simply never occurs to him that maybe most people recognize an inept leader and ■■■■ bag human being when they see one.

Maybe not:

" “We believe that these tariffs may not have to go into effect precisely because we have the Mexicans’ attention,” Mr. Navarro said."

Read the Times article. These are arrests by American authorities on the US side of the border, apprehending people who have crossed illegally. Mexico has taken no action other than jawboning in Washington… though I assume they also have consular folks reminding Senators like Ted Cruz and Martha McSally , who have come out against tariffs, of the potential dangers to their reelection chances if the tariffs are imposed.

The Mexican government knows Trump is all talk and no action. They were able to brush off his “Mexico will pay for the wall,” with no consequences, because they understand what happens when you show some backbone to a bully. With enough votes in the Senate to block the tariffs, they go into the negotiations holding most of the cards. This happened because Trump, as he so often does, rushed out policy on a whim, without taking the time to secure a consensus, even among his supporters.

Once again, Trump has demonstrated his complete inability to make deals outside of the pages of his book. What he has done with this latest shenanigan is harm the likelihood of passing his minor NAFTA revision, which was one of his few chances to report at least a symbolic victory to his supporters.

The immigration crisis requires political savvy, flexilbility and insight… none of which appear to be available in the Trump White House.

As it turns out, the words “veto proof” were not used in the actual McCarthy quote. Trump just made them up out of thin air. Fake news!

Just this afternoon, he tweeted that the disaster relief bill had passed the House, and would next be going to the Senate for approval - when in fact it had already passed the Senate a while back. Apparently not realizing that tweets never completely disappear, he deleted it, presumably after someone informed him it made him look like a ■■■■■■■ idiot who had no idea how government works, or what’s going on in his own.
