If you’re in California about 30 percent of your property taxes goes to fund schools. Rest is from sale and state taxes with little from federal government.

The state standards on math and writing may be so low that meeting them has no positive impact on a student’s first year of school so let’s stop testing them instead of increasing rigor…
Don’t raise the standard! It’s not fair!
There are a number of reasons why the cost of public education is so expensive, number 1 being that government can mandate things that make it very expensive. One thing being, having to education children here illegally. In a state like NJ it cost on average $10,000 more per pupil than that of an American student.
Furthermore, private schools will have to stay cost competitive to attract the most customers.
And on the flip side, the public schools would have less kids, and need less resources to run them as a result.
Why is that a problem?

However, we see no evidence that this will happen in the real world. We do have a perfect example of what will happen.
Just look at the university system. Many people here have rightfully so, ripped apart that system for out of control costs. Same with government involvement regarding loans and grants.
Why are conservatives so eager to mimic the same structure for K-12?

First there are various CHOICES for post High School education. Second, universities are absolutely about profit. Third, plenty of students take out loans to pay for college and are the ones responsible to pay it back.
