Rogue Heroes - Origin Story of the SAS

This is not a movie recommendation so not stepping on @travisg toes .

Anyone else watched Rogue Heroes about the founding of the SAS during World War II? If not then I recommend picking up a free trial of MGM on Amazon and binge watching.

Based on Ben Macintyre’s non fiction book of the same name, it is set in 1941 during the North African campaign and chronicles the formation and exploits of the SAS.

Lieutenants David Stirling and Jock Lewes frustrated with traditional military tactics and the success of Rommel in North Africa propose creating a small, elite commando unit to conduct raids behind enemy on airfields and supply depots.

Apparently some of the more outrageous and unbelievable moments such as throwing a grenade on a pool table to clear a room are true. Obviously there is some fictionalized elements and characters but overall its an excellent telling of the origins of modern day special forces.

The SAS was not the first special forces unit. the British had the Boer Commandos in the 19th Century and British Commandos formed in 1940 and of course everyones favorite the German Stormtruppen from World War I but i think its fair to say the SAS is one of the most influential in a post World War II world.

The acting by the three main leads is outstanding especially Jack O Connel as Paddy Mayne. Paddy Mayne. Lt Colonel Mayne was one of the British Armys most decorated soldiers during World War II. It was and is a travesty that never received the Victoria Cross for rescuing his wounded men and eliminating a machine gun post.

It really captures the humor and culture of the British Army of both commissioned and non commissioned officers. The way they talk, take the piss and interact with each other is accurate.

A great story accompanied by a cracking heavy rock/heavy metal soundtrack it demands binge watching today.

Love me some Ben MacIntyre. This one is on my Kindle but I hadn’t gotten to it yet. Maybe I’ll bump it up the stack. Thanks!

The SAS were and are still hardcore. 98% of the guys who try out for it fail out in the first week. And most of the applicants are hardcore dudes from the Royal Marines so they are the kind of guys you’d expect to get in. SAS (and SBS, the Navy’s version) are just that ridiculous.
