“Populism is understood as a thin-centered ideology that considers society to be ultimately separated into two homogeneous and antagonistic groups, ‘the pure people’ versus ‘the corrupt elite’, and which argues that politics should be an expression of the volonté générale (general will) of the People” (2007: 23).
I was, and continue to be, amazed that the GOP has taken up the mantle of populism, lead by an ivy educated elite who ■■■■■ on a gold plated toilet and owns a jet liner. It’s remarkable.
The general theme of populism is good - public policy should a wide majority of the population. Where it gets unseemly is when it creates policies designed to punish the ‘elite’ or ‘wealthy’ or ‘the swamp’ or whatever group has become the punching bag for the movement.
