Rant: Why Can't We Have Films Like This?

(Warning: Some of what you are about to see may be usafe for work, or unsuitable for children)

I’m a follower of a youtube channel called ‘American Military Network’.

These guys dig through American history, and come up with some of the most bizarre, bad ass, and most importantly true, stories I have ever heard in my life.

You know who John Wick is, right? Well meet a real character named ‘Peter Ortiz’

This story checks off all the woke Hollywood boxes, and it would make a great Jason Statham movie. You have real US immigrants, WWI heroes, the KK ■■■■■■■ K as your villan invading a union town in Pennsylvania. It’s known in history as ‘The Battle of Lilly’

And the most bizarre story I’ve heard so far. It’s so fantastic, I’m just going to let the story tell itself. Meet a real life McGuyver, Quinten Walsh.

There is a lot more where that came from, but here is my rant.

Hollywood is in a rut. There is nothing original coming out of the dream factory anymore.

Why can’t they dig through US history, find gems like this, and put them on screen?

It would be way better than what is coming this summer, that is for sure.

Excellent post and I agree completely these would all be great film projects.

If Hollywood won’t do them get young independents to.

Just like this guy…

That is SUCH a fantastic story! Thanks for sharing it.

I am a toll collector that works the midnight shift. Everything is safe for work.

Great thread. When Hollywood does dig into history you can end up with amazing movies like Saving Private Ryan and Dunkirk. But for every movie like those you get a Braveheart or The Patriot which turns the actual historical events into one dimensional stories and fictionalize them to make them more dramatic to give movie goers what they desire.

Hollywood is quite risk averse, so sequels, remakes and adapting well known stories and events is what we see. They know those movies are going to have the best chance of providing a financial return.

Movie budgets these days are insane so of course the studio execs are going to stick to tried and tested formulas to maximize ROI. These same execs make tons of mistake’s as well, as we have seen with increasing number of Star Wars and Marvel projects with the vast majority of those showing diminishing quality.

Ok, so let’s you and I make a movie about the SEAL raid on Bin Ladin.

For 99 and 44/100% of the time, the SEALS were moving so slow it was actually sleep inducing. The President was so enthralled, he was playing cards while that played out. And who can blame him?

You try and put that portion of the action on screen, and people will walk out.

That’s why movies like Braveheart and The Patriot do what they do. Because sometimes, sticking to real life events makes for a boring movie.

Yeah, I know world war movies are not real popular atm (Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare proves that), but what about the Battle of Lilly? It’s already as woke as all getup; I highly doubt even Hollywood can screw that up.

Exactly my point, which i made badly, the majority of real life events of historical importance are just that not exciting from start to finish.

In a book form going into the intricacies and the minutiae of n event can make for interesting reading but movies are a different medium.

Now if I had Musk money I would do so many movie passion projects. He is a 2000ad / Judge Dredd fan so he needs to drop a couple of hundred million on a sequel to the excellent 2012 Dredd movie. Though I am also partial to the Stallone version as well.
